This sounds hellish for economy, but otherwise it does seem like the way to make the trip if you must.

flying to sydney isn’t very fun... did it from JFK to LA and then LA to Sydney

I’ve done Atlanta to Honolulu (12ish hours) and it sucked, but I can’t imagine another eight would suck that much more. I was on a 777 from SF to HNL a few years ago and economy actually was pretty decent with legroom and ability to move around. I’ve also driven for 20 hours straight, so I imagine flying is likely less stressful on the body.

All in all, I’d do it, but I want them to bring back airplane bars and couches and stuff.

If I can convince at least one friend to go with me, I’m seriously considering doing a US > Europe (Istanbul maybe?) > India > Singapore or Bang kok > New Zealand > US trip. That would be a lot of flying, but over two weeks it seems manageable (though expensive). I think it would be very cool though, plus I could say I’ve circumnavigated the globe.

Longest single flight I’ve ever been on was ~14 hours (Chicago > Beijing), and I didn’t have any problem with that (besides the flight attendant telling me to close my window to keep the cabin dark when I wanted to be looking at the amazingly alien terrain of northern Canada). I feel like I could manage a 20 hour flight without too much difficulty. It’s the getting to the airport that stresses me out, once I’m on the plane, I’m not too bothered.

It's unsurprising to me that having proper meals and some exercise and a correct sleep schedule helps get through long flights. The hardest part of flights is that food isn't included, there is definitely no space to exercise, and fellow passengers do not adhere to the shut the fuck up policy to allow people to sleep. Longest flight I've been on was LAX to BCN for about 11 hours. It was overnight so I did actually manage to sleep most of it but that was with a blindfold and earplugs and my headphones blasting white noise on top of that. I still would definitely prefer half of the plane just be a bar or an exercise room. I don't mind sitting in economy for any length of time if it means when I'm awake I can go do something else like hang out with strangers or ride an excercise bike. Stupid profit margins getting in the way.

These flights are dumb unless you’re going for business.  If you’re traveling for fun you’ll enjoy your trip a lot better with several stops and most airlines will let you do this for no charge or you’ll save hundreds over a direct flight.

You'd have some REAL trouble heading west but traveling east probably would be efficient. Granted it will take a long time to get anywhere but at least it will be in style.

I think a flight like this is a good case for fitting the plane out with bunks for everyone.

Long haul routes like that have four pilots.

They can go a long way on one engine. I also learned recently that the A220 has been cleared for NY to London.
